Psychiatric Disorders

Recognising what needs a qualified psychiatrist - and going.

Mental illness is common, treatable, and in India still surrounded by enough stigma that people wait years before asking for help. That delay is the most damaging part of the whole picture.

What is common

Depression: persistent low mood or loss of interest for more than two weeks, with changes in sleep, appetite, energy and concentration.

Anxiety disorders: worry that is out of proportion and hard to control, often with physical symptoms - palpitations, chest tightness, breathlessness - that send people to a cardiologist first.

Bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD and schizophrenia are less common and all have established treatments.

What treatment actually looks like

Talking therapy, medication, or both, depending on the condition and its severity. Modern psychiatric medication is not sedation and not a personality change; used properly it lifts the illness so the person underneath can function. Most people improve substantially.

Nobody is asked to fight diabetes with willpower. The same courtesy is owed to depression.

Please get help now if

You are thinking about harming yourself or ending your life. This is an emergency and it is treatable. In India, Tele-MANAS is 14416 and KIRAN is 1800-599-0019, both free and available at any hour. Tell someone you trust, and do not be alone while you wait.

HealthyWin cannot diagnose or treat any of this. What we can do is say plainly that these are illnesses, that they respond to care, and that asking is not weakness.
