Brain & Mind

Calm Brain

Slowing an overrun mind down to something workable.

An overrun mind is not a character flaw and it is not fixed by being told to relax. It is a physiological state, and the useful thing about that is that physiology can be worked on directly.

The fastest thing that works

Slow breathing, with the out-breath longer than the in-breath. Four counts in, six or eight out, for a minute or two. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system and lowers heart rate measurably. It is the mechanism underneath pranayama, underneath what a clinical psychologist teaches for panic, and underneath chanting Om slowly at sunrise. Different traditions, same physiology.

What works over weeks

Regular movement, particularly outdoors. A consistent sleep schedule. Reducing caffeine, which is a genuinely common and genuinely overlooked driver of anxiety. And a deliberate boundary around work, without which the day expands until the mind never gets the signal to stand down.

You cannot argue a racing mind into calm. You can slow the breath, and the mind follows.

The difference that matters

Ordinary stress responds to ordinary measures. Anxiety that does not lift, that interferes with work or relationships, that produces panic attacks or persistent physical symptoms, is a medical matter with effective treatments. Getting help early is easier than getting help after another year of managing.
